In October of 2014, “Scratching the Surface” by Portuguese-born artist Alexandre Farto aka Vhils was installed along The Belt joining many other works. The Belt is another excellent example of “placemaking” in downtown Detroit, helping to spur activity, investment, and public interest. On weekends, this historically vacant alley is now bustling with party goers, newlyweds getting some pics, and people just enjoying the space.
The Belt is an art filled alleyway running between Library and Broadway, connecting Gratiot and Grand River. The project was envisioned and curated by The Library Street Collective and is now host to a variety of restaurants, bars, and a fairly large display of public art.
There are several permanent art installations, including some newer and some rotating works, and the Library Street Collective art gallery opens up onto The Belt.
If you’re interested in food or drink while exploring, there are several stops on or within a few feet of The Belt including Vincente’s Cuban Cuisine, Standby Bar, and Queens Bar, or it’s just a short walk to Karl’s, The Monarch Club, San Morello’s, and Wright & Company. All can be accessed on The List here.
As you’re out Grazing Detroit, be sure to check out the new pieces along The Belt.
