Mini reviews of 4’s or 5’s on the List. From Casual Dining, Fine Casual, and Fine Dining restaurants to Bars, Pubs, Bakeries and Cafes.
Restaurant: Karl’s
Concept: Casual Dining
Rating: 4 – Definately Going Back
Focus: Modern spin on old school diner with the flair of one of Detroit’s top chefs Kate Williams
Vibe: Half nightclub with live music, half diner with excellent comfort food and drink
Opened Since: 2019
Neighborhood: Broadway Area
Quick Review: Located on the second floor of the historic old Wurlitzer Building (now The Siren Hotel), Karl’s gives a nod to chef / owner Kate Wiliams’ great-great grandparents. Half of the diner has a nightclub influence with cozy seating, a bar, and periodic live music. The back half feels like a 1940’s diner (or what one might imagine a 1940’s diner to feel like) complete with a lunch counter, paper placemats, decorations and rounded out with a delicious craft cocktail and beer menu.
Features include Barb’s Maurice Salad where the debate still rages in my house whether anyone will ever be able to match the old Hudson’s Maurice dressing, and White Bean & Toast – chives, garlic, dill, olives…mmm!
Once we locate the live music schedule, we will “4 – Definitely be Going Back!”

Historic Wurlitzer Building
Karl's occupies the second floor of the Wurlitzer Building. The Wurlitzer is a 14-story Renaissance Revival structure, now home to The Siren Hotel, The Candy Bar, and Karl's. The Wurlitzer was literally falling to the ground in recent years until a group of investors saved the building in 2015 and began the renovation which was completed in 2018. This is a beautiful structure.
